Q. 12. Since then, by the righteous judgment of God, we deserve temporal and eternal punishment, is there no way by which we can escape that punishment, and be again received into favor?

Heidelberg Catechism

Question. Since then, by the righteous judgment of God, we deserve temporal and eternal punishment, is there no way by which we can escape that punishment, and be again received into favor?

Answer. God will have his justice satisfied (Deut. 27;26); and therefore we must make this full satisfaction, either by ourselves (Ezek. 18;4), or by another (2 Cor. 5;21).

Proofs.

  • [proof-1] Deut. 27;26.—Cursed be he that confirmeth not all the words of this law to do them.— Ex. 20;5.
  • [proof-2] Ezek. 18;4.—The soul that sinneth it shall die. Matt. 5;26.
  • [proof-3] 2 Cor. 5;21.—For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.—Rom. 8;3, 4.—Isa. 1;27.
