Q. 17. Why must he in one person be also very God?

Heidelberg Catechism

Question. Why must he in one person be also very God?

Answer. That he might, by the power of his Godhead, sustain, in his human nature, the burden of God’s wrath (2 Cor. 13;4); and might obtain for, and restore to us righteousness and life (1 John 4;9).

Proofs.

  • [proof-1] 2 Cor. 13;4.—For though he was crucified through weakness, yet he liveth by the power of God.— Isa. 53;4.—Acts 2;24.—Isa. 9;6.
  • [proof-2] 1 John 4;9.—In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only-begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.— Jer. 23;6.—Acts 20;28.—2 Cor. 5;21.—Rev. 19;15, 16.—2 Tim. 1;10.
