Q. 40. Why was it necessary for Christ to humble himself even unto death?

Heidelberg Catechism

Question. Why was it necessary for Christ to humble himself even unto death?

Answer. Because with respect to the justice (Rom. 1;32), and truth of God, satisfaction for our sins could be made no otherwise, than by the death of the Son of God (Gen. 2;17).

Proofs.

  • [proof-1] Rom. 1;32.—Knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death.— Rom. 8;3.—Heb. 9;28.—Luke 24;26.
  • [proof-2] Gen. 2;17.—For in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.— Gen. 3;15.—Heb. 2;9.—1 Pet. 3;18.
