Q. 61. What sayest thou that thou art righteous by faith only?

Heidelberg Catechism

Question. What sayest thou that thou art righteous by faith only?

Answer. Not that I am acceptable to God on account of the worthiness of my faith (Eph. 2;8, 9); but because only the satisfaction, righteousness and holiness of Christ is my righteousness before God (Rom. 10;4); and that I cannot receive or apply the same to myself in any other way than by faith only (Rom. 3;22).

Proofs.

  • [proof-1] Eph. 2;8, 9.—For by grace are ye saved, through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works lest any man should boast.— Phil. 3;9.—Isa. 61;10.
  • [proof-2] Rom. 10;4.—For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.— Rom. 3;24, 25.—1 Cor. 1;30.—Rom. 5;18, 19.
  • [proof-3] Rom. 3;22.—Even the righteousness of God, which is by faith in Jesus Christ, unto all and upon all them that believe.— Heb. 11;7.—Rom. 4;3.—1 John 5;10.
