Q. 109. Doth God forbid, in this command, only adultery and such like gross sins?

Heidelberg Catechism

Question. Doth God forbid, in this command, only adultery and such like gross sins?

Answer. Since both our body and soul are temples of the Holy Ghost, he commands us to preserve them pure and holy (1 Cor. 3;16); therefore he forbids all unchaste actions, gestures, words, thoughts, desires, and whatever can entice man thereto (Matt. 5;28).

Proofs.

  • [proof-1] 1 Cor. 3;16.—Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you.—1 Cor. 6;18-20.—2 Cor. 6;16.—1 Cor. 3;17.
  • [proof-2] Matt. 5;28.—Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her, hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.—2 Tim. 2;22.—1 Thess. 4;4, 5.—1 Cor. 15;33.—Eph. 5;18.—Prov. 23;31, 33.—Eph. 4;20.—Eph. 5;3, 4.
