Q. 129. What doth the word “Amen” signify?

Heidelberg Catechism

Question. What doth the word “Amen” signify?

Answer. “Amen” signifies, it shall truly and certainly be (Jer. 28;6); for my prayer is more assuredly heard of God than I feel in my heart I desire these things of him (Isa. 65;24).

Proofs.

  • [proof-1] Jer. 28;6.—The prophet Jeremiah said, Amen; the Lord do so: the Lord perform thy words which thou hast prophesied.—2 Cor. 1;20.—Rev. 3;14.
  • [proof-2] Isa. 65;24.—Before thy call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.—2 Tim. 2;12.—1 John 5;14, 15.
